CASE STUDY
Helping to fund cutting-edge research
As a department of the University of Oxford, our mission is to further the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide. Each year, we make an annual transfer to the University—a proportion of which goes towards one of the University’s major scholarship programmes, the Clarendon Fund.
Currently funding a community of more than 500 scholars on taught and research degree courses, the Clarendon Fund is the largest scheme of its kind at the University, steered by representatives from departments across the institution. The scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding graduate students by leading experts in their respective fields of research, paving the way for future leaders of the world.
Since the fund was established in 2001, OUP has provided the core funding for Clarendon scholarships. To date, we have donated more than £94 million, enabling more than 2,500 people from across the globe to study at the University. Without this support, the Fund would not be able to offer these scholarship opportunities or obtain partnership funding from departments, colleges, centrally managed awards, or external sources.
For 2022/23, the Clarendon Fund received over £8.4 million from the University Chest—the Finance Division of the University—with a large proportion of this given by OUP. In total, this enabled the Fund to award scholarships to over 230 students.
Many recipients would not be able to attend the University without the full funding provided by their scholarship. Through our involvement with the Fund, we are proud to enable Clarendon scholars from a diverse range of backgrounds the freedom to pursue their academic ambitions.
From advancing cancer treatments to studying political communications, scholars have expressed their gratitude for being selected for the Clarendon Fund and the impact their scholarships have had:
‘The Clarendon community is a very diverse community and comprises some of the greatest minds at Oxford. I am glad to be part of the wonderful Clarendon community. I look forward to delivering an impactful contribution to the field of cancer research.’

‘Clarendon allowed me to connect with others and learn more about how gender-affirming care differs in various parts of the world and be involved in discussions on how we can improve health equity in different countries.’
Rakhshan Kamran
DPhil Musculoskeletal Sciences
‘Without the Clarendon scholarship I simply would not have been able to take up my offer to conduct my doctoral research here - and nor, I think, would I have had quite as much fun doing it!’
